Please give us a short summary of your website?
Right Choice Ed is a private tutoring business located in Western Canada. We offer K-12 and university students a resource for LPI, Toefl, and Provincial Exams 10-12 (BC/Yukon). We sell DVDs, booklets, and online or in home tutoring sessions.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
For over 15 years I have been a professional tutor, and I decided that I wanted to teach the world. I have been blessed to meet some of the most fantastic students in the world and I know that I can offer students an opportunity to grow academically.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
This is my very first time.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Right Choice Ed. has been my operating company name for over 15 years. It seemed natural to expand the name to contain educational programs and tutoring services simply for ease with the meta tags
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
My programs are very personal. There is a lot of hype in tutoring services and most students are scared of making a mistake. I want students to feel safe and feel immediately that they are cared about. I am not interested in profits, hopefully they will follow. I want students to feel that they have a reliable, and comfortable source in which to excel in the learning process.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I would like to work totally online eventually teaching Webcam classes and selling DVDs and Lesson packages once they have been fully developed. My hope is to enjoy growing old while living in Mexico and teaching online in Korea.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Currently they are at par - later my budget will need to increase in order to sell product. Since the product is in it's early stages - so too are the investments.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would put a live video on the page and invite people to listen to a class. I truly think that if I could talk to them they would consider my services more readily than they are now.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
I would like to think that I can. If good fortune should fall upon me, I would hire a competent staff to assist with the orders. I am fortunate enough that I have a few wonderful teacher friends who would be delighted to see this service successful.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Luckily, not many.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Promoting my website with minimal cash flow. There are many places to send money but few guarantees about exposure. I have found more hits using my personal name than using the name of my website. When "tutors" is placed in the search engine - I simply don't show up.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
I think that Craig's List has been my best bet to date, following as mentioned above, joining tutor lists to show my name. Since my budget is limited and the costs to prepare a first website without orders to pay for it has been a concern, promotion has been limited.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
I expected to see my name in lights immediately. Thank goodness, I read some things at the library that helped me to put things in perspective.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Not long, and hopefully for at least the next 20 years!
