Free Data Visualization Resources and Guest Lectures for Educators

By Data Visualization at 07/06/09 15:30

Data visualization is an up-and-coming topic in computer science and mathematics. Traditionally, data visualization was about finding the best way to present data. Some kind of analysis tool like Excel, or Splus, or R would be used to analyze existing data, following which the results would be compiled into some kind of chart or graph.

With the advent of visual analysis, data visualization is becoming a source of renewed interest in higher education and business schools. Visual analysis incorporates visualization into the analysis process, allowing insights to be discovered at every step of the analysis process, instead of just at the end.

Educators can receive cutting edge data visualization software for free through Tableau Software's Tableau for Teaching program. Tableau for Teaching includes free software for classroom use, as well as worksheets, guest lectures, and other support for teachers.

One of the best resources is their Beginner's Guide to Data Visualization, which includes an actual data set and a tutorial to using data visualization to pull insights out.
